Captain of the Year Structure and Calculations 2024

What:

Captain of the Year is a competition among current FSA member captains that compete in at least 2 out of the 4 FSA hosted fishing tournaments in a year. Points are earned by weighing-in Target and Slam fish (when applicable) in the captain’s top 2 scoring tournaments. 5 bonus points per tournament are awarded to captains who fish more than 2 tournaments.

How:

In order to compare different species of fish. The fish are weighted to standardize all fish to an average weight of 16 pounds (Average king mackerel). Species specific multipliers are assigned per tournament and are documented at the bottom of the page Chart 1 through Chart 4. All Target species and Slam fish are multiplied by the associated multiplier to give the fishes Weighted pounds. The captain with the most Weighted Pounds per tournament will receive 100 points. All other captains will receive the percent of weighted pounds they caught compared to the winning captain. (example of percent of weighted pounds can be seen below)

At the end of the year, a captain’s best 2 of 4 tournaments are summed and ranked to generate the captain of the year. At least 2 tournaments need to be fished to qualify for Captain of the year. 5 bonus points per tournament are awarded to captains who fish 3 or 4 tournaments.

Fish That Count Towards COY:

Flounder Frenzy: 4 heaviest flounder

Offshore Challenge: (3 heaviest tuna * Multiplier) + (3 heaviest dolphin * Multiplier)

Summer Slam: (3 heaviest Cobia * Multiplier) + (4 heaviest slam fish * Multipliers)

King Mackerel: (4 heaviest King Mackerel * Multiplier) + (4 heaviest slam fish * Multipliers)

NOTE: All slam fish are defined in each tournament rules sheet and are below in charts 1-4 for each tournament.

Why:

Captain of the Year is a club sponsored competition to promote captains to participate in more FSA Fishing Tournaments and increase interest in FSA membership..

Prize:

The winner of Captain of the Year will be presented with a trophy at the FSA Dinner Dance and FREE ENTRY into any one tournament for the following calendar year.

FAQs:

Q: Do I have to be an FSA member at the time of the tournament to qualify?

A: Yes, the captain must be a current FSA member at the start of the tournament to qualify.

Q: Do I have to own the boat to be the captain?

A: No, you do not need to own the boat to be the captain for a tournament you just need to be listed as captain on the entry form.

Q: What exactly does free entry into any one tournament include?

A: Free entry into the tournament includes the ALL IN price. This does NOT include Dinner costs for Crew or T shirts.

Q: What if I catch some slam fish but don't complete the stringer to qualify for the slam?

A: You do not need to weigh in all eligible target species / all 4 slam fish to get points. If you catch only one slam fish that one fish will still go towards COY points.

EXAMPLE 1: Flounder Tournament

Captain A 4 heaviest flounder weight: 2 lbs, 3 lbs, 3 lbs, and 4 lbs.

Captain B 4 heaviest flounder weight: 2 lbs, 2 lbs, 3 lbs, 3 lbs.

Captain A Weighted Pounds: Fish weight (2+3+3+4) * Flounder Multiplier (6.67) = 80.0 weighted pounds

Captain B Weighted Pounds: Fish weight (2+2+3+3) * Flounder multiplier (6.67) = 66.7 weighted pounds

Percent of weighted pounds (66.7 Weighted pounds Captain B) / (80 Weighted pounds Captain A) = 83.4%

Captain A would get 100 points and Captain B caught 83.4% percent of weighted pounds. Captain B would get 83.4 points.

EXAMPLE 2: Summer Slam

Captain A: 3 heaviest cobia weight: 20 lbs, 20 lbs, 30 lbs. Heaviest Weighted Slam fish: Bluefish 2 lbs, flounder 3 lbs, spadefish 4 lbs, cobia 30 lbs

NOTE: the heaviest cobia for Captain A counts as both target species AND part of the slam. There are two scenarios where this can happen. 1.) Captain A caught 3 other slam fish, so the cobia is the 4th slam fish. 2.) The cobia is one of the heaviest weighted slam fish caught by Captain A if more than 4 slam fish were caught.

Captain B: only caught 1 cobia: 26 lbs. Heaviest weighted slam fish: spadefish 12 lbs, sea bass 4 lbs, flounder: 4 lbs, blue fish 4 lbs.

Captain B would get 100 points and Captain A caught 73% of weighted pounds, so Captain A would get 73 points.

NOTE: Captain B only caught 1 cobia but was still able to win due to large slam fish.
